Principal's Message
Roosevelt once said, “Citizens acting together can do a number of things better than if they were left to individual action.” It is with this in mind that I can confidently say 2013 has been an eventful year for Canberra Secondary. Together, we gave our best and the best has reaped us great rewards - well-adapted, morally upright and socially responsible citizens.
As a school, we kick started our flagship Start Right Programme. The inception of the Start Right Programme has enabled us to fashion our students into disciplined and determined receptacles of knowledge. This is perfectly aligned to one of our core beliefs in Canberra that is to set the expectations for our students and to promote a positive tone in the school.
Championing our cause to produce better citizens of tomorrow, we have the Student Development Department. With the different Values-in-Action initiatives, school-wide motivations workshops conducted by effective external vendors as well as customised Character and Citizenship Education lessons, we were able to expound on the resulting teachable moments to help our students internalise our Canberran values that transcend the socio-emotional and moral sphere. These initiatives are in line with our strategic thrust of developing our students’ character and cultivating their well-being through holistic character development. The improvement in the results of the annual Quality School Experience survey administered to our students by MOE has further affirmed the good work of the school.
With our school niche in Digital Media, our students are trained to be competent in the use of digital media application software and tools required to equip our students with integral 21st Century Competencies. At Canberra, developing the holistic well-being of our students and preparing them for the 21st century workforce are our main priorities.
In the area of Aesthetic Development, our performing arts attained high level of achievement in the Singapore Youth Festival Arts Presentation. The Malay Dance and Guzheng were awarded the Certificate of Distinction while the Symphonic Band and Modern Dance were presented with the Certificate of Accomplishment. Our Malay Dance group was honoured to be selected to perform at the closing ceremony of the Singapore Youth Festival. Our Basketball team has also outshone other schools and emerged as champion in the North Zone 5 3-on-3 Challenge as well as the Mediacorp’s 3-on-3 Challenge.
Canberra Secondary does not do things in half measures and we have rolled out a series of initiatives, for example our Healthy Set Meals programme, to help us ascend as one of the few health promoting schools in Singapore as well as attain the coveted Sustained CHERISH (Platinum) Award since 2008.
In our pursuit of Academic Excellence, commitment and determination have been displayed by both our staff and students to ensure the potential of every student is attained. We are proud to announce that our students have done well in the national examinations. For Sec 4NT 2012 and Sec 4NA 2012, we saw an improvement in the percentage passes for 5 subjects. For Sec 4E 2012, we made an improvement in the percentage passes for 9 subjects. Finally for Sec 5NA 2012, an improvement in the percentage passes for 7 subjects has been made. We are very proud of our students – past and present.
None of these achievements would have been possible without the single-minded commitment and dedicated care of the teachers, allied educators and the executive and administrative staff. It is through their hard work and dedication that we have managed to achieve our various successes. I would also like to thank our parents and alumni for their continual support and contribution to the multifarious school events. Without our key stakeholders unfailing support and partnership, the school would not be able to achieve so much.
Canberra Secondary School will continue to strive for excellence by cultivating citizens of tomorrow by giving our best as a family. Education minister, Heng Swee Keat, said: “Every s
