Principal's Message
2012 was an exciting and fruitful year for the school. As expressed in our school vision and goals, the school has actively sought to provide varied and meaningful opportunities to develop our students holistically and strives to become a school of distinction nurturing future-ready citizens with sound character. Our collective aspirations are also articulated in the school theme for 2012 – 2013, 'Deepen our roots, Spread our Wings' and the theme for the 2012 Prize Giving Day, 'Fly'... which aim to remind our staff and students to stay true and anchored to our purpose and beliefs in whatever we do, to set high expectations for ourselves, to dare to dream possibilities and reach high for our goals. In the academic arena, the school has continued to put up a fine performance in the 2012 PSLE, recording the highest pass rate in its school history and consistent performance across the different subject areas. This is testimony of the hard work and efforts of our teachers and students. The school will continue with our efforts to strive for academic rigour and excellence. The school has also enjoyed a successful year in the non-academic arena. As an affirmation of our whole-school green efforts, the school is recently awarded the Sustained Achievement Award or SAA for Green Audit. At the 2012 MOE Workplan Seminar this year, the school was also awarded the MOE Sustained Achievement Award for its achievements in the area of sports, our 6th award in this category. Our students have performed particularly well in our Basketball and Volleyball CCA, among the wide range of sports CCAs offered by the school. In basketball, the Senior Boys and the Senior Girls were placed 2nd and 4th in the North Zone Basketball Championships respectively, with our Junior Boys emerging as Champions in the North Zone. In volleyball, beyond their outstanding results in the zonal competition, the students went on represented the school in the National Volleyball Championships and emerged second in the national competition. Besides basketball and volleyball, the school is also very proud to see our students achieving commendable results in the area of bowling, golf and gymnastics. I would like to congratulate the students, teachers and coaches for their achievements and hard work, and in displaying fine qualities of good sportsmanship when participating in the various sports events and programmes. In the area of aesthetics, the students have done the school proud with their commendable results at this year's Singapore Youth Festival Central Judging. We have the highest number of arts groups participating at the SYF CJ this year, with the Guzheng Ensemble clinching their 2nd Gold with Honours Award since 2008. Beyond the awards attained by the performing arts groups, what is even more proud and meaningful for me would be to see the groups sharing what they have learned through participating in external performances, many of them for the first time this year. The brass band had a successful maiden outdoor performance at the Merlion Park; the hip hop dance group performed at a cluster event hosted by Yio Chu Kang Secondary School; the Angklung Ensemble performed to crowds at the KK Hospital Outreach Programme, the Guzheng Ensemble was invited to perform the opening act at the SYF Chinese Orchestra and Guzheng Presentation and our Chinese dance group will be showcasing their talents at a community event this month. In addition, the school's Guitar Ensemble was featured on Okto in an arts programme titled 'Celebrating Youths' this year. The school is proud of the achievements of our aesthetic groups and is certain that the experiences gleaned from these learning opportunities have heightened their appreciation and interest for the arts and have helped our students gained greater confidence. In 2012, our pupils also had the opportunity to attend a series of exciting and meaningful local and overseas learning journeys. From the sharing of the students during our school assembly programme, I am heartened to note that they have enjoyed and gained new experiences and knowledge and have learned about the different cultures and lifestyles. They have also learned to be more confident, independent and sensitive to the needs of others, which are important character traits of the 21st century. Opportunities were also provided for our students' talents and interests to be developed through our flagship IMAS2 Programme and through a rich array of enrichment activities. The IMAS2 Social Action Classes had the opportunity to put what they have learned and values into action through meaningful community projects such as hosting students from Chao Yang School when they joined us for our school-based events, planning for a visit to the AMK THK hospital during the festive period to give their well-wishes to the residents. The students also visit and interact with the residents through games and concert on a fortnightly basis. Such community projects also provide opportunities for our students to develop their leadership and communication skills. 2013 will be an exciting year for Anderson. The school has been identified for PRIME and will be moving to our holding site along AMK Ave 2 for about 2 years from 2014 to 2015. The school will also function as a single session institution when we return to our upgraded site in 2016. Our teachers and students will also enjoy enhanced facilities which will include a new Outdoor Experiential Learning Centre, an Indoor Sports Hall, synthetic field, special rooms like band room, PAL rooms and dance studio, staff resource rooms as well as bigger classrooms. The many successes achieved by the school would not have been possible without the strong support and partnership of our key stakeholders like our SAC, PLG, Angel Reading Parents, our parents and other community partners. The school is grateful and appreciative to all of you in making possible the many school events and programmes such as the weekly reading programme for our lower primary children, the highly successful Anderson Family Nite, Children's Day Celebration, and the daily traffic management and canteen duties; all aimed at providing our students with a holistic education and a safe and happy school environment. I look forward to working in synergy with my staff, parents and stakeholders in building a strong and nurturing school culture, and in providing a robust and well-rounded education for our students. While we are proud of our awards and achievements as they serve to affirm our hard work and efforts and are important benchmarks for us to strive for higher level of excellence, what is even more important is our quest to build strong and sound moral values and character in our students as this will provide a compass on their journey in life. Wishing all a purposeful year ahead!
