Profile of Northland Primary School
Northland Primary School is a government school which started Yishun in 1988. In 2012, it has an enrolment of about 1500 students, about 90 teaching and 15 administrative staff members, 2 Vice-Principals and the Principal. The current Principal, Mr Tony Tan, was appointed to the school in December 2013. The first Vice-Principal, Mr Zafilin bin Abdul Hamid joined the school in December 2011 and the second Vice-Principal, Ms Jes Neo Seo Aik, joined the school in January 2014.
Northland Primary has established itself as a school of high standing in the local community. Powered by its culture of excellence, it has consistently produced quality PSLE results that are above the national average and achieved several prominent awards from MOE and external organisations. The school has also been awarded the Programme for School-based Excellence (PSE) for Chess. Northland is the reigning national school champion in International Chess, and consistently produces players who represent Singapore in age-group competitions. Renowned for its high standard in Mathematics, Northland Primary is the cluster’s Centre of Learning for Mathematics.
Northland Primary believes in providing quality holistic education to its students in the context of a caring community. In line with MOE’s goal of nurturing 21st century students, the school has reviewed its strategic direction and made revisions to its programmes, while growing its people to deliver the desired outcomes. The school has a Vision: Firm Foundations, Future Learnings. Its teaching & learning framework focuses on teaching for understanding and formative assessment. It is developing a more integrated character development curriculum in alignment with MOE’s Character and Citizenship Education (CCE). There is more focus on early diagnosis and intervention to catch students before they fall through the cracks. The school has embarked on MOE’s primary school reforms such as PAL (Programmes for Active Learning) and PAM (PE, Art and Music) which place greater emphasis on holistic education. The school has commenced PERI upgrading at the end of 2012 and it is schedued to be completed by the end of 2014..
